What is a Varicocele?
A varicocele refers to the enlargement of veins that are situated within the scrotum which is the containing pouch for the male gonads. Just like in the case of varicose veins, abnormal performance of valves within the veins causing blood to pool and enlarge the veins gives rise to the development of varicoceles.
Types of Varicocele
Primary Varicocele: This is the prevalent type which many a times occurs during adolescence due to the abnormality in the development of veins.
Secondary Varicocele: This is as a result of pressure worsening in the abdominal cavity by any cause, whether a tumor or some other impediment in the pelvis.
Symptoms
Many men with varicoceles may be asymptomatic. Nevertheless, these may include:
Scrotal Lumps or Swellings
Alluvial or dull pain in the groin area especially after exercise or prolonged standing
A heavy feeling in the scrotal sac
Infertility as every varicocele affects the production and quality of sperms
Evaluation of the Condition
Clinical assessment usually necessitates a healthcare professional’s evaluation of the patient’s physical state. This means that in addition to a physical exam, diagnostic imaging tests, like an ultrasound, may be used in extreme cases to evaluate the extent and severity of the condition’s varicose veins.
Possible treatments
Management may be deferred in the absence of pain, discomfort or infertility due to the varicocele. Available treatments include:
Operative management: Surgery that entails either surgical removal or ligation of distended veins as a means of alleviating symptoms and restoring fertility when necessary.
Embolization: It is where blood vessels are accessed through a thin tube, catheter, and then the enlarged vein is blocked off for the treatment.
Assumptions
Even after all the above treatment options, it is still advisable to seek assistance from a doctor if one suspects having a varicocele or is experiencing other symptoms. This is because going for treatment and management at an early stage will minimize or even eliminate any effects that the condition may have on fertility.
