Somali Oil Exploration by Oruç Reis

Oruc Reis is a Turkish survey ship which is primarily engaged in oil and gas activities in the Eastern Mediterranean and other areas. It has recently also partaken in exploration activities offshore Somalia, which is mired with geopolitics.

The coastal region of Somalia has large offshore deposits of oil and gas, which has attracted many foreign investors in the area. However, oil explorations in this region are often dangerous, owing to the problems of piracy, conflict and environmental conservation.

Turkey and Somalia have developed their partnership in various sectors over the years, and this has been so pronounced in the oil and gas sector. In 2021, the pair signed pacts to enhance the energy resources of the countries including exploration of oil and gas in the Somali waters.

Such agreements are usually inclusive of many elements like provision of technical support, funds allocation to exploration activities, and even provision of skills. Turkey’s interest in the energy sector of Somalia is also part of its grand strategy of extending its sphere of influence in the region, the Horn of Africa where they have been growing their diplomatic and commercial activities.
